Studies suggest that participation in Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) programs can increase access and consumption of fresh fruits and vegetables.  Supporting healthier eating habits, which can lead to improved health outcomes and reduced healthcare costs, is part of our RHENSOM (Rural Health Education Network of Schoharie, Otsego, and Montgomery) 2025 program goals.  Implementing this promising intervention at Bassett Healthcare Network, the largest employer in Otsego County, is made possible through our Center for Rural Community Health.

In January 2025, Center staff began planning this year’s CSA program with Middlefield Orchard in Cooperstown, NY.  Employees were offered CSA distribution at five locations: O’Connor Hospital (Delhi), Bassett Medical Center (Cooperstown), FoxCare Center (Oneonta), Oneonta Specialty Services (Oneonta), and Middlefield Orchard farm store.  This year the options included 8-shares at each location, or 16-shares at the main hospital and farm store. CSA participants also receive 5% cash discount on additional purchases at the Middlefield Orchard farm store and their tables at the Cooperstown, Oneonta, and Delhi Farmers’ Markets. In addition, CSA members may pick 1 pint of berries and 10 pounds of apples at Middlefield Orchard free of charge.

This on-site CSA program provides a convenient way for Network employees to access fresh, healthy food. The program also supports local agriculture, thereby having a positive environmental and economic impact.
